Diego Quesada: Transitivity, Voice, and the Middle. Spanish se revisited
This paper is concerned with two phenomena that have attracted the attention of linguists for quite some time (though the approaches were not always the most suitable), the Spanish se-construction, and the verbal category of MIDDLE VOICE. The former has traditionally been regarded as a passive structure characterized by agent demotion; the author rejects this view by showing that in all (four) readings of this construction there is agentivity, which although minimal still precludes certain syntactic processes that "normal" passives allow. As for the MIDDLE VOICE, there is a disagreement with S. Kemmer's recent book, which distinguishes between REFLEXIVE and MIDDLE as separate (though related) domains based on what she calls "degree of distinguishability of participants". Since this distinction is a matter of degree, the author proposes a prototype approach to the category of MIDDLE with self-affectedness as its core meaning; in this approach reflexive constructions constitute the prototype and the other readings/constructions involving self-affectedness are viewd as farther or closer to the prototype. The MIDDLE VOICE is regarded as a category manifesting itself either as a basic (inflectional) or as a derived (by means of clitics or pronouns) category.

spesso incontrato delle valutazioni divergenti o addirittura contradittorie. Se per gli
uni la novella rientra senz'altro nell'ambito della letteratura didattica, per gli altri
il tipo di racconto instaurato dal Boccaccio si configura come un vero e proprio anti-exemplum.
Il quesito, decisivo per la comprensione del capolavoro boccacciano, rimanda nello stesso
tempo ad una domanda cruciale della pragmatica dei testi narrativi: in che misura il mondo
del dire (la parola narrativa) vuole/può incidere sul mondo del fare (l'agire
quotidiano)? Partendo da un confronto fra il Conde Lucanor e il Decameron
si lasciano delineare, proprio a livello del discorso metanarrativo conenuto nelle
rispettive opere, due concezioni radicalmente opposte della funzione pragmatica del
narrare, che sembrano definirsi, oltre che per il loro valore storico, anche per una loro
applicabilità più generale.
