Wolfgang Frühwald: Gutenbergs Galaxis im 21. Jahrhundert. Die wissenschaftliche Bibliothek im Spannungsfeld von Kulturauftrag und Informations-Management: Plenarvortrag beim 92. Deutschen Bibliothekartag am 9. April 2002 in Augsburg

In einer Situation, in der viele Bibliotheken fast verzweifelt versuchen, der doppelten Aufgabe ihres Auftrags: (1) Sammlung, Pflege und Erschließung der Buchbestände und (2) (auch digitales) Informationsmanagement und Informationsnavigation gerecht zu werden, plädiert der Vortrag für das Schwergewicht auf dem Kulturauftrag der Bibliotheken. Der Aufbau des zweiten Zweiges so genannter "Hybridbibliotheken", also der Aufbau und die Strukturierung der elektronischen Information und Dokumentation, erfordert neue Mittel, neues Personal. Er darf nicht zu Lasten des ursprünglichen Auftrags der Bibliotheken gehen, die sonst zur fortschreitenden kulturellen Verarmung Europas beitragen. Bibliotheken sind mehr als Sammelorte für Bücher, sie sind (seit Alters) "psyches iatreion", Seelenapotheken, deren gespeichertes Weltwissen auch dann "spricht", wenn es scheinbar im Staub der Magazine versunken ist.

Rainer Kuhlen et al.: ENFORUM, ein Instrument des Wissensmanagements in Forschung und Ausbildung im Informationswesen

Die Konzeption von ENFORUM beruht auf einer verteilten Organisation der informationswissenschaftlichen Kompetenzzentren im deutschsprachigen Bereich und der kooperativen Erarbeitung von ENFORUM-Einträgen über elektronische Kommunikationsforen. ENFORUM wird zum einen in den wissenschaftlichen Kontext elektronischer Wörterbücher und Enzyklopädien eingeordnet, zum anderen werden Vor- und Nachteile asynchroner elektronischer Kommunikation diskutiert, mit dem Ergebnis, dass die Kompensationsleistung von Moderatoren in Kommunikationsforen für den Erfolg der Diskurse unabdingbar ist. Der aktuelle Stand von ENFORUM (März 2002) wird vorgestellt. ENFORUM ist ein voll operatives System mit adaptiver Benutzerverwaltung, flexiblen Such- und Navigationsformen und ersten Funktionen in Richtung Wissensplattform. Überlegungen zur funktionalen Weiterentwicklung von ENFORUM und zum Einsatz in der Ausbildung schließen den Artikel ab.

Bob Usherwood: The inspiration and the facts: library and information services in the United Kingdom

The paper examines, on a cross-sector, thematic basis, topics that are common to all parts of Britain’s library and information world. These include the impact of constitutional change and new government policies, particularly those associated with social inclusion and lifelong learning. The modern emphasis on digitization, and the re-emphasis on reading, are also considered alongside the challenges facing the LIS workforce, and the increasing importance placed on assessment, accountability and best value. Marketing strategies, new library buildings, education and research are also discussed. The paper concludes that, despite some tensions, unresolved issues, and a few disappointments, the past few years have seen a renaissance in British librarianship, and that the profession is well placed to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Michel G. Wesseling: OCLC PICA: committed to libraries in Europe

The article discusses the role of OCLC PICA in the European information landscape. The cooperative wishes to position itself as a professional body among other individuals and organisations in the library profession. Based on 30 years of experience in two separate organisations OCLC and PICA have merged their European activities in order to better focus on Europe. The European library landscape is probably one of the most sophisticated as well as the most complicated in the world. The main part of the article discusses the creation of a pan-European service PiCarta in which an index is made available to different local and regional union catalogues and their services. It also touches the area of cooperative virtual reference services.

Svein Arne Brygfjeld: Access to web archives: the Nordic Web Archive Access Project approach

National institutions in the international community have realized the importance and significance of digital documents living on the World Wide Web as a part of the current cultural history. Collecting, preserving and giving access to this vast collection of information is a challenge of great importance. This article points at some general focus area, and goes more in depth on access to Web archives. The Nordic Web Archive project is described to some extent. The project has pointed at some alternative ways of enabling users to take benefit of Web archives, and it also brings experiences on the access area forward.

Christine Burblies, Irina Sens: GetInfo – Volltextversorgung in Technik und Naturwissenschaften

Kernstück des vom BMBF geförderten Projektes GetInfo, das die TIB Hannover gemeinsam mit dem FIZ Karlsruhe durchführt, ist ein Volltext-Server mit elektronischen Dokumenten und Metadaten. Elektronische Verlagsdokumente, die nicht auf dem GetInfo-Server gespeichert werden, werden über Hyperlinks verfügbar gemacht. In 2001 konnten erste größere Verlagsabschlüsse, z. B. mit AIP/APS, für Pay-per-View erreicht werden. Ca. 12.000 "Graue-Literatur-Dokumente" sind verfügbar. GetInfo wird für Kunden ab Mai 2002 angeboten (www.getinfo-doc.de).
