Krohs, Ulrich: Gehirn und FreiheitEine Naturphilosophie des Bewusstseins
Consciousness arises in the brain, communication and action are based on neuronal processes. Does the neuronal basis of our consciousness stand in the way of freedom of action and will? On the contrary, it is the brain that renders freedom possible! Ulrich Krohs argues for this from a perspective of philosophy of nature. He takes into account empirical findings and theoretical approaches from biology, psychology and cognitive science and also keeps physics in mind. Two considerations form the starting point: The evolutionary generation of complex consciousness can only be plausibly explained by the fact that consciousness has an effect on behavior. And conscious states of neuronal structures in the brain are of limited stabiblity, which means that consciousness is always in flux. The state model of consciousness developed in this book shows how the contents of perceptions, sensations, thoughts and desires affect neuronal processes and thus co-determine our communication and actions. It thus outlines the path to a solution to central aspects of the mind-body problem.
