Mit dieser Arbeit zu E. T. A. Hoffmanns Erzählung "Der Sandmann" liefert Latifi erstmals eine historisch-kritische Edition des Manuskripts und des Erstdrucks von 1817. Die Faksimile- Edition der Handschrift konfrontiert die Abbildungen des "Sandmann"-Manuskripts mit einer diplomatischen Umschrift. Diese transkribiert Hoffmanns Autograf zeichen- und standgetreu. Auch der Erstdruck wird in Orthografie und Zeichensetzung getreu wiedergegeben.

Begleitet wird die Edition durch eine Interpretation des Textes, die diesen als immanente Textpoetik Hoffmanns liest. Sie nimmt Hoffmanns Rede vom allegorischen Zug des Textes ("Das ganze ist eine sattsam ausgeführte Allegorie") erstmals ernst und begreift als Fragerichtung der textpoetologischen Reflexion Hoffmanns das Verhältnis der problematischen Stellung von Leser (Rezeption), Autor (Produktion) und Text zueinander.

With this work on E. T. A. Hoffmann's story “Der Sandmann”, Latifi provides the first historical-critical edition of the manuscript and the first printing of 1817. The facsimile edition of the manuscript confronts the illustrations of the “Sandmann” manuscript with a diplomatic transcription. This transcribes Hoffmann's autograph true to character and position. The first print is also faithfully reproduced in terms of spelling and punctuation.

The edition is accompanied by an interpretation of the text that reads it as Hoffmann's immanent textual poetics. For the first time, it takes Hoffmann's talk of the allegorical aspect of the text (“The whole is a richly executed allegory”) seriously and understands the relationship between the problematic juxtaposition of reader (reception), author (production) and text as the tendency of Hoffmann's poetological reflection.
