In poetics up to the present day, poetry has repeatedly been characterized as a form of sound art. Yet a large part of the surviving lyrical production handed down from tradition is only available in written form. In this study, suggestions are made as to how the acoustic or auditory dimension of these lyrical formations can be reconstructed. It thus contributes to the research fields of both lyricology and historical sound science. The method presented here is subsequently tested in three literary-historical model studies on Johann Klaj, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock and Ludwig Tieck. The chapters of the historical part can be read as contributions to a linguistic sound history of German-language poetry which has yet to be written.

Tacke, Felix: Sprachliche AufmerksamkeitslenkungHistorische Syntax und Pragmatik romanischer Zeigeaktkonstruktionen
Directing attention, especially the establishment of joint attention, represents one of the most important basic communicative functions. For this purpose, the Romance languages possess a particularly fascinating deictic category of expression: "pointing act constructions". These include, on the one hand, sentence-valued expressions - besides it. ecco and fr. voici/voilà, also kat. vet/veus, heus, sp. he (aquí), pt. eis and rum. iată - and, on the other hand, recent verb-subject constructions (among others, sp. aquí/ahí está, pt. aqui/cá está). In addition to analyzing their syntactic and pragmatic properties in contemporary languages, this book provides for the first time a comprehensive historical-comparative study of their forms, functions, and main literary and non-literary usage traditions. The most famous: "Ecce homo" or "Voilà un homme". |

Eschenburg, Barbara: "Ist nicht der Russe der menschlichste Mensch?"Thomas Manns Menschlichkeitsbegriff im Kontext russischer Literatur
"Is not the Russian the most human of men?" is the question Thomas Mann asks in his controversial essay Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen. At this point, it serves to polarize against France in order to present "the Russian" as a model of humanity by contrast. But it also invokes an image of humanity that goes beyond its temporal context, accompanying Thomas Mann's work up to Doktor Faustus and informed in particular by his view of two Russian writers: Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. Among other aspects, it is Dostoevsky's ideas of responsibility and Tolstoy's social revolutionary ideas that play a prominent role in shaping Mann's development from an individualistic concept of humanity towards a social humanism. In her book, Barbara Eschenburg finds points of contact between selected works by Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky and Thomas Mann's novels and essays – from Der Zauberberg to Joseph und seine Brüder and Doktor Faustus.

Lenkung der Dinge – Magie, Kunst und Politik in der Frühen NeuzeitHrsg. von Stefan Bayer, Kirsten Dickhaut und Irene Herzog
In the course of the humanistic examination of his position in the cosmos, man in the early modern period also reformulates his radius of action. The notion of the 'control of things' based on the causality concept, rooted in a hierarchical structure at the top of which magicians, political rulers or and artists appear as sovereigns of action, describes the possibilities of successful and effective action in magic, politics, and art. The discussion in literary texts, in the arts, and in treatises on statecraft in the early modern period is centered around the possibility and nature of the controllability of external as well as internal nature, of objects, actions, and also of people's perception and fate. The contributions in this volume discuss the concept of the 'control of things' in literature and art against the background of their historical-cultural and epistemological context.

By 1900, the medical phenomenon of neurasthenia had grown into an image of general disorder manifesting the malaise of modernity. Neurasthenia was always more than the psychological suffering of individuals – it was also the price society had to pay for progress. Thomas Mann, too, was influenced by his contemporaries‘ obsession with time. Especially in his early works, such as Buddenbrooks and Tonio Kröger, these subjects come together as if focussed in a burning glass: between degeneration and the psychology of the self, neurasthenia has become a symptom of a crisis of the bourgeois subject; from today's perspective, for example, the symptomatology of Thomas Buddenbrooks can be read as the first case vignette in the history of burnout. In this volume, however, the aim is not to apply the interpretation of neurasthenia as a contemporary illness around 1900 to the present, which application has by now turned into a simple template. Rather, it aims to interrogate the discourses surrounding neurasthenia and artistic potential as time-bound debates and to ask about the conditions of writing in the mirror of neurasthenia. This revisiting of a famous topos – illness and art in Thomas Mann – thus aims to take a new look at an old topic.

Frank Witzel's essay is a self-encounter in mirrors provided by texts. It encounters wounds that will not disappear, even if sometimes it seems like writing may provide an approach to healing. The ego shows itself only in its concealment, the "I" eludes itself. Authorship appears as a principle that can hardly be determined.
